Why we love Faroese wool

In the Faroes we have a saying “Ull er Føroya Gull” - meaning that our wool is our gold.
Faroese wool carries with it a story as rich and enduring as the Faroe Islands themselves. The wool has been woven into the culture and traditions of the islanders for centuries, serving as a symbol of resilience and a testament of their resourceful spirit. Unlike many regions that focus on selling raw wool, the Faroese have long embraced hand knitting to craft garments that showcase their intricate designs and skilled craftsmanship to the world.
At the beginning of the century, thai natural resource was seen as a waste product from mutton production and because of a lack of interest, the wool was burned. We’ve made it our mission to change that narrative and turn it into our creations.
What sets Faroese wool apart is its purity. Entirely organic, coming from sheep that graze freely on the islands’ rugged terrain, feeding on natural vegetation without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. This method honours traditional, low-impact farming, which helps maintain the islands’ rich biodiversity and aligns with sustainable, eco-friendly living. The result is a durable, high-quality fibre that holds its shape, even after repeated washing—though its natural odour-resistant properties mean you won’t need to wash it far too often.

Among the rolling hills of the Faroe Islands, short-tailed sheep have grazed for generations. Known as Faroese gold, their wool is symbol of cultural pride and craftsmanship.

Faroese wool is not just about durability.
It’s remarkably adaptable. Infused with natural lanolin, a wax-like oil secreted by the sheep, it offers a unique balance of warmth and breathability. This lanolin acts as a natural insulator, keeping you cosy in winter and comfortably cool in summer, even maintaining its warmth when wet—perfect for the unpredictable island weather. There’s some kind of comfort in the fact that our breed of sheep are known for their extraordinary resilience and that the wool is naturally designed for survival.
Our native sheep are unique in their colour patterns. Each shade is unique to this ancient breed. Boasting spots of black, different shades of brown and dark greys, plus our personal favourite, a beautiful colouring which flirts perfectly between yellow and grey hues. To us, these colours are perfect as is, which is why we, most of the time, don’t dye this wool and instead let its natural colour take centre stage.
Finally, this wool is biodegradable. When its journey comes to an end, it returns to the earth, minimising its environmental impact. By choosing Faroese wool, you’re not just wearing a garment; you’re embracing a heritage steeped in sustainability and craftsmanship passed down through generations. It’s a celebration of a timeless connection between people, land, and tradition—with steadfast trust in both quality and the environment.
